RED Digital Cinema's "Monstro" Sensor

Red Digital Cinema have followed on from the announcement of thier "Mysterium X" sensor upgrade for the Red One with the news of a totally new sensor in development called "Monstro"."RED Digital Cinema announces the development of "Monstro", the Mysterium sensor of the future. "Monstro" is the sensor that that removes all limitations in current sensor technology. It is expected to arrive the end of 2010." - Jim JannardThe "Monstro" is set to add some serious fuel to the fire already blazing for Red Digital Cinema. The sensor promises increased resolution, extended dynamic range (to meet or exceed current film stocks) and faster read/reset times for the rolling shutter. The increase in photosites to 5.5K total (5K effective) means that the resulting debayered image is close to a true RGB 4K image."Mysterium is a break-through sensor. But it is no secret that sensors still do not have the DNR of film. It is also no secret that sensors will some day surpass film in every aspect. We have a sensor program in place that will put pressure on every other sensor program AND film. The sensor is the heart of a camera. If we don't lead in this area, we do not deserve to sell cameras." - Jim JannardMore pixels is not all, the dynamic range of the new sensor technology is promised to surpass film, this more than anything has caused the most excitement among Red enthusiasts, and the most fear for Red's competitors. Red Digital Cinema threatened the status quo with the announcement of the Red One three years ago, which many wrote off as a scam until the first production cameras began to ship over a year ago. Red delivered more than they promised with the Red One, and so it's safe to assume all bets are off when it comes to the "Monstro".It is known that Red Digital Cinema currently have one of the most agressive sensor development programs in the history of digital imaging, if anyone can finally take the last few strides to win the digital vs film battle, it will be Red."We fully understand that our customers want resolution, maximum speed, incredible dynamic range, and low light capability. "Monstro" represents the final frontier in the digital vs. film struggle." - Jim Jannard
