London, 20 October 2009 – Canon today announces that it is currently developing a firmware update to the EOS 5D Mark II to enable the recording of high definition 1080p video at 24 and 25fps. The decision to develop new firmware to support these features has been taken following feedback received from cinematographers and photographers.

I'm going to introduce what this system consists of, and what it's theoretical capabilities are, and attempt to find some support to actually build a test machine.

First, why would one want to do this?

The answer is a. every film maker should really have a FCP suite of thier own, and b. the software itself does most of the work, and the hardware peripherals necessary to get media in and out of the system, and provide the real-time Redcode RAW support are relatively cheap.

The camera shoots 3D images at 240fps using a single lens, making the current 3D production requirement of two co-located cameras redundant.
 

TI leaping into 4K fray

Cinemark inks for Texas Instruments platform

Texas Instruments has announced that its "next generation technology platform" for digital projection will include a 4K option, providing four times as many pixels as standard 2K projectors, and it has already lined up exhibitor Cinemark to buy its 4K tech.
 
The platform will be available by year's end, with 4K to follow some time in 2010, depending on how quickly projector makers include it in their designs.
 
Alan Stock, CEO of 2,700-screen Cinemark, said TI's DLP platform will be "our exclusive platform of choice for 4K deployments."

In the widest theatrical 3D film release to date, approximately $16 million in 3D box office was generated by Columbia Pictures’ and Sony Pictures Animation’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in theatres equipped with RealD’s leading 3D cinema platform. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs earned an estimated $30.3 million in total box office and debuted at #1 during its opening weekend. The box office generated in theatres with RealD technology accounted for over 50% of the weekend’s receipts. The film was released in 3,119 locations, and the majority of the playdates were RealD and other 3D bookings.
